What GPA Do You Need for UC Schools? (2026 Guide)
Each UC campus has different GPA expectations. Here are the actual numbers and strategies for the University of California system.
The UC System Is Test-Blind
Before diving into GPAs, know this: as of 2021, all UC campuses are permanently test-blind. They will not consider SAT or ACT scores under any circumstances, even if you submit them. This makes GPA the single most important quantitative factor in UC admissions.
But the UCs do not use your regular GPA. They recalculate it using their own formula.
How UC GPA Is Calculated
The UC GPA uses only your A-G coursework from sophomore and junior year (10th and 11th grade). Freshman and senior year grades are not included in the calculation but are still reviewed holistically.
The formula: A = 4 points, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0. Honors, AP, and IB courses receive an extra point (capped at 8 semesters of bonus points across sophomore and junior year). The maximum possible UC GPA is approximately 4.4 for in-state students and 4.5 for out-of-state students.
This means your UC GPA may differ significantly from the GPA on your transcript. A student with a 3.6 unweighted and a heavy AP load might have a 4.1 UC GPA.
GPA Ranges by Campus
Here are the approximate middle 50 percent UC GPAs for recent admitted classes:
UCLA: 4.18 - 4.31 (UC GPA). One of the two most selective UC campuses.
UC Berkeley: 4.13 - 4.30. Competitive with UCLA, with some variation by college (Engineering is higher).
UC San Diego: 4.03 - 4.28. Has risen dramatically in selectivity over the past decade.
UC Irvine: 3.96 - 4.26. Strong in STEM and competitive for popular majors.
UC Davis: 3.90 - 4.21. Excellent value, particularly for STEM and agriculture.
UC Santa Barbara: 3.96 - 4.25. More selective than many families expect. Strong in engineering and sciences.
UC Santa Cruz: 3.56 - 4.05. More accessible but still competitive for certain programs.
UC Riverside: 3.48 - 3.95. The most accessible UC campus. Strong admit rates for qualified applicants.
UC Merced: 3.20 - 3.72. The newest UC campus with the highest admit rate. Growing quickly.
The Minimum Floor
To be eligible for any UC campus, California residents need a minimum 3.0 GPA in A-G courses. Out-of-state and international students need a minimum 3.4. These are floors, not targets. Meeting the minimum makes you eligible but not competitive at most campuses.
Major Matters Enormously
At UCLA and Berkeley especially, your intended major significantly affects your chances. Computer Science at both campuses admits students with average GPAs well above 4.2. Less popular majors (certain humanities and social sciences) have lower effective thresholds. Applying to a less competitive major and switching later is a common strategy, though some departments restrict this.
The Comprehensive Review
UCs use a 14-factor comprehensive review that goes beyond GPA. Factors include: academic performance and course rigor, personal achievements, leadership, community involvement, circumstances and challenges overcome, and the personal insight questions (PIQs).
The four PIQs are where students differentiate themselves. With no test scores and GPAs clustered tightly together, the PIQs become a critical factor in admissions decisions. Write them with specificity and authenticity. Generic responses about "wanting to make a difference" will not help.
Out-of-State Applicants
UCs admit significantly fewer out-of-state students, and the GPA threshold is higher. UCLA and Berkeley admit out-of-state students at roughly half the rate of in-state students. Your UC GPA needs to be meaningfully above the median to be competitive as an out-of-state applicant.
Strategic Approach
Calculate your UC GPA separately from your regular GPA. Focus on sophomore and junior year performance. Max out on AP and honors courses during those years (up to the 8-semester cap for bonus points). Write exceptional PIQs that reveal something scores and grades cannot.
